Best Ways to Stay Cool in Alsace
When temperatures rise in Colmar, Alsace remains as beautiful as ever… but it is best enjoyed a little differently. Sometimes all it takes is changing your schedule, finding some shade, gaining a little altitude, or choosing an indoor visit to turn a hot summer day into a wonderful holiday memory.
From Maison 1934, you are ideally located to enjoy Colmar, the Vosges Mountains, lakes, castles, museums, charming Alsatian villages, and cycling routes through the vineyards. Here are some of our favourite ways to slow down, breathe deeply, and stay cool during the warmest days of summer.
🌿 Before You Head Out: Keeping Your Apartment Cool
This is probably the most useful advice on this page. The apartments at Maison 1934 benefit from excellent modern insulation. However, even a well-insulated home stays more comfortable when you help keep the heat outside.
During the day: keep windows closed when the outdoor air is warmer than the indoor air, close shutters exposed to direct sunlight, and use the fans to circulate the cooler air already inside.
In the evening, at night and early in the morning: once the outside air becomes cooler, open the windows wide to create airflow and naturally refresh the apartment.
These simple old-fashioned habits are often the most effective during a heatwave.
Our Three Favourite Cool Escapes
If we had to recommend only three outings during a particularly hot day, these would be our choices. They offer the perfect balance between beauty, freshness and easy access from Colmar.
Lac Blanc
Our first choice for quickly enjoying a mountain atmosphere: pine forests, altitude, rocky landscapes, panoramic views and fresher air.
- Location: 68370 Orbey
- Altitude: approximately 1,055 m
- From Maison 1934: about 40–45 minutes by car
- Website: lac-blanc.com
Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle
An iconic Alsatian landmark, combining history, altitude and the natural coolness of thick stone walls.
- Location: Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, 67600 Orschwiller
- From Maison 1934: about 40 minutes by car
- Website: haut-koenigsbourg.fr
The Route des Crêtes
A beautiful drive through the Vosges Mountains when the Alsace plain becomes too hot.
- Atmosphere: panoramic views, forests, mountain meadows and traditional farm inns
- Bring: water, comfortable shoes and sun protection
- Best enjoyed: late afternoon or as a full-day nature excursion
💧 Looking for Water?
Colmar-Houssen Leisure Lake
For a nearby and easy solution during hot weather, the Colmar-Houssen leisure lake is an excellent choice. It offers a refreshing break without requiring a long excursion.
- Address: 37 Rue Denis Papin, 68000 Colmar
- From Maison 1934: about 10 minutes by car
- Website: Colmar-Houssen Leisure Lake
You will find a beach area and seasonal activities. As opening hours and conditions may vary, we recommend checking current information before visiting.
Mountain Lakes in the Vosges
The mountain lakes offer a completely different atmosphere from Colmar: wilder, shadier and cooler. They are ideal if you wish to escape the heat of the city.
- Lac Blanc: the easiest and most popular cool escape from Colmar.
- Lac Noir: quieter, more forested and perfect for peaceful walks.
- Lac du Forlet (Trout Lake): a beautiful natural setting for nature lovers.
🚲 Why Not Explore by Bike?
Cycling can be a wonderful option during warm weather. The movement creates a pleasant breeze, distances feel shorter, and the cycle paths around Colmar make it easy to reach villages and vineyards without spending too much time standing in direct sunlight.
It is also a lovely way to enjoy a simple summer moment: a few local treats, a full water bottle, a shady spot among the vineyards, and a peaceful picnic away from the crowds.
- Ride early in the morning or later in the day.
- Bring plenty of water.
- Wear sunglasses and a hat or cap.
- Apply sunscreen, even if the moving air feels cooler.
- Avoid intense physical effort during the hottest hours.
🌲 Looking for Shade and Altitude?
One of Colmar’s greatest advantages is its proximity to the Vosges Mountains. In less than an hour, you can leave the heat of the plain behind and find forests, scenic roads and mountain landscapes.
Col de la Schlucht
A wonderful destination when you want to gain altitude quickly. Temperatures are often much more pleasant here, especially later in the day.
Le Hohneck
For travellers who love dramatic scenery, Le Hohneck offers one of the finest panoramic views in the Vosges Mountains.
Vosges Forests
A simple walk beneath the trees can completely change your perception of the heat. Shade, altitude and forest humidity often make hiking far more comfortable than walking in town.

This iconic castle is one of Alsace’s most famous landmarks. During hot weather, we recommend visiting in the morning or late afternoon.

🍦 A Sweet Break When Temperatures Drop
A summer day is not only about sightseeing. It is also about small pleasures: a cold drink on a terrace, an artisan ice cream while strolling through town, or a leisurely dinner when the city becomes pleasant again.
In the late afternoon and evening, Colmar’s historic centre is especially enjoyable for these simple moments.
🍇 Alsatian Villages: Timing Matters
Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Turckheim are beautiful in summer, but during a heatwave, choosing the right time of day makes all the difference.

- Eguisheim: particularly charming in the morning.

- Riquewihr: best visited early before the crowds arrive.
